IPL Photofacial Treatments: Getting the Close-up

Often referred to as an IPL Photofacial, IPL laser photorejuvenation uses intense pulsed light laser treatments to deliver a spectral range of light that targets the tissue of the skin to achieve face resurfacing and visible rejuvenation.

During IPL photofacial therapy, the light penetrates the epidermis to gently heat the fibroblast cells deep in the dermis, which then causes them to produce more collagen. This increased collagen production improves skin texture and reduces the appearance fine lines and wrinkles.

At Navarre Wellness, our team is highly trained in the use of IPL therapy. We are area industry leaders for the services we provide our clients and pride ourselves on our expertise in offering IPL photofacial laser skin rejuvenation or laser skin resurfacing to address a number of needs including:

  • Improvement of skin texture through the stimulation of collagen production
  • Improvement of pore size due to temporary reduction in oil production
  • Reduction and lightening of rosacea, areas of redness, and broken or visible blood vessels
  • Removal and reduction of sun damage, age spots, and areas of hyperpigmentation
  • Controls the flushing response of skin

The Full Picture

For the treatment of age spots, sun damage, hyperpigmentation, freckles, and visible veins, the IPL device is used to emit a range of lightwaves that are then tuned and targeted at the treatment area, which absorb the light beam. The absorption of the light beam results in damage to the vessel wall or fragmentation of the melanin pigment, which is then absorbed by the body to become less visible.

IPL photofacial or photorejuvenation generally requires three to five treatments in a series of appointments spread over a period during which one treatment is performed every three to six weeks. Full effects are safely achieved with little discomfort during sessions that last between 30 to 90 minutes, depending on the size of the area being treated. IPL treatment is generally tolerated well by most patients and requires no downtime, though healing time can take up to a week to fully resolve any noticeable redness of veins that have been treated or temporary darkening of freckles or age spots. The use of makeup can be resumed immediately after IPL laser treatment, though removal should be done gently and proper use of moisturizers will be necessary.

Say Cheese!

For each IPL photofacial session, patients will be provided with special protection to shield eyes from being damaged by the laser. Cool gel will be applied to the treatment area before the IPL handpiece is gently applied to the skin and emits pulses of light, causing a very slight sting that often becomes less intense with each appointment. At the end of the treatment session, the gel is wiped away, and the area is cleaned with a warm cloth before a moisturizing sunscreen is applied.

Development Process

Patients who have undergone IPL photofacial treatments may experience side effects such as crusting at the treatment site, small areas of superficial blistering, occasional bruising, mild, temporary swelling; redness, and temporary accentuation of dark spots.

Skin will feel smoother and have a more even tone; and redness, flushing, age spots, and fine lines will gradually reduce as visible improvements increase with each laser resurfacing treatment.

The lasting effects of IPL treatments are directly related to the amount of sun exposure following laser treatments. With proper care and sun protection, annual maintenance treatments may be enough to maintain the benefits, though to maintain collagen growth, treatment every 6-12 months is recommended.
